This is my attempt to join the new millennium.
I realize that I am at least a decade behind all the technological wonder,
but Ill catch up. I have always been a bit slow out of the blocks,
but then, I am a long distance runner and understand the art of pacing.
I have included a few documents that may or may not mean anything to you.
My yearly syllabus is a rough guide that follows the Shelby County and Collierville
High School Curriculum Guide. I have included my class rules and procedures.
You will also find the outside reading list for this year. A hard copy will
be sent home on the first day of school.
As soon as I complete the refresher session during teacher's in-service and
remember how to amend this web site, I will update it. As it
becomes old
hat,
like
using
e-mail,
etc,
I
will
update
the
site weekly
or perhaps even daily to include assignments, test dates, homework, and such.
In the meantime I am very proud to have put this much together, so be patient.
Laugh at me or with me, but
be patient nevertheless.
I am not a complete cave dweller!
I know how to use e-mail, and unlike SOME
friends of mine, I check it often.
However, I only check my email
during the school day. I don't take my computer to basketball or track
practice. If you
send an email after 1:15 or so, I may not see it until 6:30 the following
morning.

Rules and Proceedures
Coach Yates English 151 Room 138 2010-2011 Collierville High
Dear students, parents, and guardians:
I look forward to a successful year. Below you will find a list of rules you
need to be aware of. Please read them, sign, and return the bottom portion
of this form to me by Tuesday, August 10. This will be the first posted grade
in my class. Keep the rest of the form, and use it as the first page in your
loose-leaf notebook. Thanks, and welcome back to school.
1. Be in your seat when the tardy bell rings.
You will be marked tardy for not being in your assigned seat when the bell rings
unless you have a note from a teacher or an administrator. Sit down and begin
bellwork. Under no circumstances are you admitted to class when you have been
absent from school without an office-issued, admit slip. If you have to leave
the room to get your admit, you will be marked tardy. Don’t be hanging
around the door, pencil sharpener, or my desk when the bell rings. The second
tardy will result in a parent call. The third will go on a referral to Mr. Field,
freshman administrator, and result in Saturday School.
2. Be prepared to participate and earn a grade daily.
Upon entering the classroom, sit in your seat, get out your homework, and begin
the bell work on the board. You should bring your textbook, notebook, and a pen
to class each day. You will use blue or black ink pen and white, standard-lined,
loose-leaf, notebook paper. Paper torn from a spiral notebook must not have a
ragged edge and must be standard size. Points will be deducted per infraction.
Homework is due at the beginning of class. Work turned in late will cost you
a 33% deduction.
3. Do not get out of your seat without permission.
Always raise your hand for approval before standing.
4. Be courteous and respectful.
This includes speaking while someone else is speaking. Always raise your hand
for approval before speaking. Keep your hands and feet to yourself at all times.
The room is to be kept free of litter. Defacing property and using others’ possessions
without permission will not be tolerated.
5. Do not ask to leave the room.
You will not be allowed to go to the restroom, office, library, another teacher’s
room, etc. Take care of business between classes and if you are going to be tardy,
bring a note.
6. Do not bring food, drink, or gum to class.
This includes water. Screw top bottles are not allowed in Tennessee State Schools.
7. Complete all assignments.
It is your responsibility to make up any work you’ve missed when you have
an excused absence from school. You have one day for every day you missed to
make up the work. If your absence is unexcused, you will receive a zero. For
all other zeros, you will be given Academic Support. Failure to go to Academic
Support and make up the work will result in a referral. For exams, you and I
will have to work around my practice and game schedule since I coach basketball
and track. Occasionally, I can remain after school, but usually you will need
to come in before school to make-up exams. Work turned in late is 33% off per
day .
8. Understand that all actions have consequences.
A single violation of one of the rules listed above will result in your name
being noted by the teacher. Consider it a warning. A second violation during
the school year will result in a phone call to your parent and/or disciplinary
action complying with school policy. Further violations will lead to more severe
penalties. This list is not all inclusive. There are many things you need to
be familiar with, such as cell phone use, dress code, etc. Please familiarize
yourself with your Parent-Student Handbooks of Shelby County Schools and Collierville
High School.
---------------------------------------------------------------------Cut-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I understand and agree to follow Coach Yates’ classroom rules and procedures
stated above. I also understand that failure to follow these rules will affect
my grades and may result in further disciplinary action.

FRESHMEN:
Coach Yates English 151 2010 - 2011
Dear Parents and Students:
You may avoid the hunt for books during the year and contribute to English Department
funds by ordering one or all of the following books required for outside reading
in English this year. New books may cost you a little less, and the department
will receive a percentage of the revenue through an arrangement with Hooked on
Books in Collierville. Money will be used to purchase supplies, equipment, and
curriculum to enhance the instructional program. This is the only time this year
we will offer this opportunity. Remember, purchasing books is only an option.
You may find these books at the library or borrow them from a friend, as long
as you have a copy at the appropriate time. The list below is in chronological
order.
We appreciate your participation.
