How to Earn Points:
1. Answer questions. (+1)
2. Come to the overhead/chalkboard to work out problems. (+2)
3. Volunteer for demonstrations. (+2)
4. Preparedness for class. (+1) This includes promptly beginning bell-work and having all materials on the desk.
5. Creating and sharing stellar analogies to science principles. (+1-2)How the Participation Grade is Calculated:
∑ Participation is a critical component to the learning experience and will count 15% of the student’s overall grade.
∑ To guarantee a 100%, the “goal” of each student is to achieve 2-3 participation points each day.
∑ Some weeks will have more opportunities to earn points than others. For the slower weeks, the number of points required to earn a 100% will be determined by the number of times the top 25% of the class participated. For examples, if at least 25% of the class participated at least 6 times, 6 points becomes a 100%, 5 points becomes a 90%, and every participation point less is also prorated.
∑ The participation grade is usually calculated biweekly.
∑ At the end of a two week period, the student begins on a new slate; previous participation grades do not affect future participation grades.Other:
∑ Students will not be called on every time they raise their hands, so they must pay attention and be diligent throughout the class period to earn the points they need.
∑ Students may check their participation points anytime before or after class to ensure they are up to date on their progress.
∑ If a student is absent 1-2 days, they must make up those points during the remainder of the week and will be given priority when I select students to answer questions. If students are absent more than 2 days, they must see the teacher regarding a makeup assignment as soon as possible.
