School Is More Than Books

Colleges want students with sound academic records. They also want students who have shown the energy to participate in extracurricular activities, hold jobs, volunteer for community activities, and travel. Furthermore, they want students to show excellence in these nonacademic activities as well as enthusiasm in pursuing them.

Although grades and test scores are usually the most important considerations for admission to college, extra-curricular activities and work experience can play an important role, especially for selective schools. More than that, these activities can contribute immensely to the personal development of students during their high school years. There are many scholarship opportunities involving community service.

Extracurricular activities are a training ground for college and career. You learn how to interact with other people as you build floats for homecoming parades, run with the cross country team every morning before school, and play in the school band. You pick up very real organizational skills by planning club meetings and the Junior / Senior Prom or being the manager of a sport. What's more, you learn how to meet deadlines. The yearbook, Pathfinder, and the newspaper, The Dragon News, have to be put out on time, and minutes have to ready for club meetings. There is also the opportunity to develop your leadership skills. You don't have to be the president of an organization to do this. You can take charge of a committee to clean up after an event or to make posters for a car wash. The more practice you have at doing these things, the more skilled an individual you will become. There is one added dividend that you gain by participating in extracurricular activities - they are a lot of fun.
