ADVANCED PLACEMENT - BURFORD
Welcome to the wonderful world of ART! I am delighted that you have chosen to take this class. I believe that a student who elects to take an art course beyond Art I is truly interested in the visual arts and is committed to learning all that he/she can during the year. I have high expectations of you and know you will be prepared, act responsible and give an honest effort in this class. Read, absorb and retain the following information.
AP Studio Art - Drawing and Design Portfolio
COURSE OVERVIEW
AP Studio Art is a full year class which meets everyday for one hour.
The Advanced Placement Program in Studio Art enables highly motivated and talented
students to perform at the college level while still in high school. Emphasis
is on advanced drawing and painting skills. Students compile a portfolio that
will fulfill College Board requirements.
Students must be committed to working
on projects inside and outside the scheduled class time.
Students will be expected to produce a minimum of 30 quality works of art which
show a mastery in a variety of media, techniques, and subject matter. Emphasis
is placed on drawing from direct observation; the application of color and
design principles; understanding the fundamentals of two-dimensional design;
the development of a body of work that is of the student’s own choosing;
and application of the critique process in written and oral form.
COURSE PRE -REQUISITES:
Art I, II and III. (This advanced level course is not recommended for students
earning less than a strong ‘B’ average in Art III.)
Completion of Advanced Placement Art Summer Enrichment - All assignments will
be due on the first day of the school year.
(Failure to produce the work at a quality level will result in dismissal from
the class.)
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Students will demonstrate, within breath of artwork, a range of high quality
artwork using a variety of concepts, techniques and art forms. Through their
drawing experiences, students will focus on direct observation, visual problem
solving, and the best use of elements and principles of design.
Students will produce a body of work which shows growth within their investigation
of an idea or personal interest
Students will select 5 quality pieces for presentation
Students will engage in verbal and written critiques throughout the year.
Students will visit an art gallery 4 times within the school year and produce
a written critique on a selected piece of artwork.
Students will keep a sketchbook with weekly themes and open ended problems
to guide them through a creative process. While working on concentration
pieces, sketchbook must relate to their concentration.
YEARLY BREAKDOWN
1st NINE WEEKS:
Class Critique of summer work as well as one on one instruction.
Organized set of 6 to 10 class assignments, with individual student problem
solving to each assignment in a studio setting. Focus is on direct observation,
fundamentals
of drawing and painting, compositions and space exploration, surface manipulation
and expressive mark making. Works will be used in Breath section of portfolio.
Weekly sketchbook assignments to be completed outside the classroom.
Gallery Visitation
Thinking strategies for concentrations. Group and individual critique with
one on one instruction. Concentration theme (topic and first 6 project
ideas) will
be chosen before the end of the grading period.
2nd NINE WEEKS:
Individual work on 6 concentration pieces
Preparation of portfolio for Scholastic Art. Selection of artwork, Slide
prep, and written artist statements
Weekly sketchbook assignments to be completed outside the classroom.
Must relate to concentration.
Gallery Visitation
Exam: Required for AP students regardless of exemption. Written critique
of first 6 concentration pieces.
3rd NINE WEEKS:
Continuation of individual work on additional 6 concentration pieces
Weekly sketchbook assignments to be completed outside the classroom.
Must relate to concentration.

4th NINE WEEKS:

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
1. Abide by all rules set fourth by teacher, Collierville High School and Shelby County Schools.
2. Complete and hand in assignments by due date. Late work will not be accepted.
3. Complete 1 Gallery Visitation each nine weeks. Late work will not be accepted.
4. Complete weekly homework assignment. Late work will not be accepted.
5. Follow directions and criteria set by teacher and the AP program.
6. Pay the art fee of $75.00 by Date assigned. Checks made payable to Collierville High School Art Dept.
8. Have paid the Advanced Placement Test Fee.
7. Replenish the necessary supplies by Date assigned from reliable sources.
8. Allow the teacher to teach and classmates to learn.

CRITERIA FOR GRADING
1. Every assignment will be graded, including small preliminary exercises
2. Everything must be turned in on the due date. Dates are announced well in advance. Failure to meet deadlines will result in a grade of Zero.
3. Each assignment will have specific evaluation criteria unique to the assignment. In addition to the evaluation criteria, each assignment will be evaluated on these three constants: Composition, Craftsmanship and Creative Self Expression.
YOUR GRADE
1. 50%-Project Grade: The project grade is very similar to a unit test score. This grade measures the students understanding and mastery of specific concepts within the visual language. 100pts
2. 35%-Daily Grade: The daily grade is based on daily task completion. This may be preliminary drawings, weekly bell work and quizzes.
3. 15%-Participation Grade: The participation grade in based on the students active involvement within the class. This grade measures whether the student is on task or not. If the student is not prepared for class (breaking rule #2), it reflects on the participation grade. grade given weekly.
Quizzes: will also measure the students understanding and mastery of specific concepts within the unit. This grade is a daily grade.
*Gallery Visitations will be counted as a project grade. Written papers will be project or daily grade based on the level of difficulty.
Extra Credit
Extra credit can be earned by visiting museums and galleries, extra projects and by volunteering artistic abilities to the community or school. Forms will be provided. Extra credit WILL NOT substitute for any assignment but is an addition to. Extra credit will not be accepted one week prior to the end of the six weeks.
