Summer Work &
Course Information
Dear HONORS GEOMETRY STUDENTS,
I am very excited about the upcoming school year and the new discoveries
you will make along the way. Unified Geometry is an exploration of
many areas of Mathematical Science. These include Plane, Spherical,
and Transformational Geometry, Logic and Reasoning, Trigonometry,
and Geometric Probability.
You have been recommended for this course, because of your interest
in pursuing the study of advanced mathematics and your reputation
as an exceptional mathematics student. The HONORS GEOMETRY summer work
consists of three parts:
PART I will allow you to keep your algebra skills sharp over the summer
break and start the school year with ease.
You will access the on-line textbook by following these steps:
Go to http://www.glencoe.com/sec/math/geometry/geo/geo_05/index.php/tn/2005
If you have difficulty, copy and paste the address into a new window.
Select Online Student Edition.
Enter the Username: GEOTN05
and Password: dUfAfr3b
Open the file with Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Follow the path: Table of Contents, Student Handbook, Skills, Prerequisite
Skills
Start on page 728. Make sure you understand all of the highlighted
terms.
Read the examples, and answer all Odd-numbered exercises on pages
729-753. Use
your mental math skills (not a calculator)!
(There will be a test on these 14 skill areas during the first week of school.)
PART
II is a FUN reading assignment! Edwin Abbott’s "Flatland: The Romance
of Many Dimensions" is a book of mathematical fantasy that encourages the reader
to imagine a 2-dimensional world, as opposed to our 3-dimensional world. It
is
available at local bookstores, the library, and on-line. And, “Yes, the
animated movie, “Flatland: The Movie” starring Martin Sheen, is
scheduled to come out this summer! “
(There will be a project related to “Flatland” during the first quarter.)
PART
III is to take advantage of the summer sales to set up your notebook and
purchase necessary materials.
Here’s what you will need:
∑
3-ring zippered binder with dividers
∑
CHS Agenda Book (available for purchase on first day of school)
∑
Scientific or Graphing Calculator (TI-30 or TI-84 recommended)
∑
Pens or pencils
∑
Notebook paper * You’ll need a lot!
∑
Graph Paper (QUAD-RULED) * You’ll need a lot!
∑
Compass *The really cheap ones are sometimes hard to use and we will use
them frequently.
∑
Protractor
∑
Ruler
∑
Index Cards
∑ “Geometer’s Sketchpad Software” (available for purchase on
first day of school)
Learn more about this powerful mathematics software at Key
Curriculum Press
*MAKE CHECK PAYABLE TO CHS FOR $29.95
*NOTE: This is an optional purchase, but students not purchasing
GSP for home use will be required to complete their technology assignments
BEFORE
or AFTER
SCHOOL in the CHS library. The software is also a tool that can be used
for many homework assignments in all levels of mathematics, including
Algebra
through Calculus.
I wish you the best, as you prepare for an exciting and challenging 2007-2008
school year and I look forward to meeting you in August!
Sincerely,
